web server

Software que que se ejecuta en un ordenador conectado a una red y responde a las peticiones HTTP realizadas por los navegadores web de los clientes, poniendo a su disposición la información de los sitios web almacenados en el servidor. Un servidor web puede utilizarse tanto para servir recursos Web como para ejecutar en paralelo otros servicios relacionados, como el envío de correos electrónicos, el almacenamiento de datos en bases de datos y la transferencia de archivos por FTP3.

Arranca el primer servidor web denominado nxoc01.cern.ch, que posteriormente se denominaría info.cern.ch. La primera página http://nxoc01.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html se pierde cuando el CERN cierra el sitio.

Tim Berners-Lee instala en su computador y el de Robert Cailliau la primera versión de un cliente web y comunican con el primer web server en info.cern.ch.

Paul Kunz instala el primer servidor Web fuera de Europa, en el SLAC, (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center), en San Francisco, California, Estados Unidos.
